33 Wigmore Street, W1

Home of Debenhams first department store in 1907, the team had a second opportunity to work on this prestigious property. Today it houses beautiful office spaces - however, we had been tasked to refurbish the reception area. This unique project threw up lots of challenges, but has been one of our favourites.

One of the biggest challenges was installing new services to the original marble. To get around this in some areas we used a specialist decorator to match the cable trunking to the marble so it was invisible to the eye. This method worked perfectly.

We restored all marble, doors & timber paneling back to former glory. Whilst adding in lots of bespoke joinery and new installations that both compliment the history and make it more functional for today’s needs.

What the Architect said:

‘The marble could not be drilled or damaged, and the balustrade and decorative ceiling features were carefully restored to full glory, including the external canopy and timber entrance doors. Specialist marble cleaning transformed the finish throughout, and due to the complex and delicate installation of new services and lighting, Signature provided innovative ways of concealing new cable routes

This was a wonderful and unique project, and we are very proud to have been able to restore this historic lobby for our Client and those working in the building to enjoy for many years to come’.

A bit of history

This vast Baroque revival building, across the street from the Wigmore Hall, was built as a department store for Debenham and Freebody. In 1813 William Debenham invested in a company established by William Clark selling expensive fabrics, bonnets, gloves and parasols from his store at 44 Wigmore Street. The new company became known as Clark asnd Debenham. In 1851 Clement Freebody invested in the company and in response it was renamed Debenham and Freebody. That company was incorporated in 1905 and in 1907 they moved into this purpose build store further along Wigmore Street. Credit Manchestorhistory.net
